Indian currency is called the Rupee (Rs), the smallest unit being the paise. One rupee equals 100 paise. The Rupees are available in paper notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are of 5,10,20,25 and 50 paise and Rs. 1, 2 and 5 denominations.
Travelling with foreign currency: A declaration has to been made at the entry point if you’re travelling with foreign currencies of worth more than 2, 500 U. S. dollars.
Exchange:
There are banks & authorized money exchange dealers throughout India, especially in the tourist areas.
Money Transfer:
Money can be transferred to India from abroad & from Nepal through the banks.
Credit Cards & ATMs:
Credit cards & travelers’ cheques are accepted in major cities, hotels, & shops. ATM facilities are available only in major cities. India is still largely a rural country. It’s advisable to carry Indian currency of small denominations especially if you are trekking in the mountains. |
