While Nepal is predominantly a Hindu country, Bhutan is predominantly Buddhist. But, although Nepalis seem to not only accept but also promote the Buddhism’s influence, making their culture different from the Indian Hinduism, Bhutan’s ruling class are concerned to keep their form of practice free from Hindu influence. Stastistically 70% of Bhutanse practice Buddhism, 25% are believed to practice Hinduism & 5% others.

The current official religion of Bhutan is dominated by the Drukpa sects to which is also the religion of Bhutan’s present monarchy. The theocracy is conducted by means of a sophisticated eight monasteries (dzongs) controlling 200 shrines(gompas) thrrought the country.

There are also some Christians, & practiceners of the ancient religion of the Tibetan region, the Bon.

Mahayana Buddhist 70% - 75%; Hindu 20 - 24%, others  6%
