Bhutan has a total land area of 47,000 sq km, Out of the total land boundaries of 1075 km, China covers 470 km, while India covers the rest 605 km. Bhutan’s geography is similar to Nepal’s – the land elevation begins from 300m in the south to over 7,500 meters high Kula Gangri & Gangkar Punsum Himalaya peaks in the north. Similar to Nepal’s, Bhutan is also divided into three major regions: the southern foothills, the inner Himalayas, & the higher Himalayas.
Southern Bhutan consists of dense forests, & steep rocks. The capital Thimpu & other major towns like Paro, Punakha, etc lie in the central or inner Himalayan region. Like Nepal, Bhutan is landlocked by Tibet in the north & India in the south. Bhutan’s large rivers like Wang, Sunkosh, Trongsa and Manas create valleys as they flow south. The southern plain is also called the Daurs Plain. |
